STYX

A film by Wolfgang Fischer

VIEW TRAILER

"Styx" depicts the transformation of a strong woman torn from her contented world during a sailing trip. When she becomes the only person to come to the aid of a group of refugees shipwrecked on the high seas, she is shown the limits of her importance and of the empathy of her cultural milieu. She is left slipping impotently from one nightmare to the next, and by the end she is forced to recognize that there is no way to counter the cruelties of real life. Only chance can save her.

SYSTEM CRASHER

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt / Germany | 2019 | Subtitles

VIEW TRAILER

STORYLINE: She is rebellious, she is aggressive and unpredictable. Benni’s real name is Bernadette. But just see what happens when anyone calls her that! Foster families, living groups, a special needs school: Benni has already been through it all and is kicked out wherever she goes. The outwardly delicate nine-year-old is already what the youth welfare office refers to as a “system crasher.” But this doesn’t matter to Benni, since she has only one goal: to live at home with her mom again! But Bianca is scared of her own daughter.

WHY WATCH?: While being acutely authentic, first-time director Nora Fingscheidt, System Crasher transcends a psychological study and crafts vibrant, visceral and emotional cinema, which evokes unforgettable performances.

“...a thoughtful and compassionate portrait of one child's trauma and anger, featuring an enigmatic Helena Zengel in the lead role.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

"A grisly, gripping watch." (The Guardian)

WHEN?: We’d love our Dunamaise Cinema family to all watch this together on Wednesday 6 May 2020 at 8pm but we understand that our schedules may not allow this, which is why the film can be downloaded and will be available to watch within your own time for 1 week! If you can’t download tonight, don’t worry you’ll still be able to rent the movie for a little while more.
