As the Celtic Tiger seems to have slunk into a corner, curled into a ball and gone to sleep, God only knows where (has anyone seen him?) and our newspapers are full of stories of doom and gloom and bad weather, an evening of hilarious comedy with the inimitable Jon Kenny is just what the doctor ordered. We could all do with a good dose of that! So turn off your televisions and radios - they're only making you sick - and come out for an evening of craic!

The Brother
Based on the writings of Myles na gCopaleen
Eamon Morrissey's relationship with The Brother began when his solo show opened in the Peacock Theatre thirty-five years ago and it remains one of the most recognised dramatisations of Irish writing. While The Brother is firmly lodged in the dark days of Ireland in the forties and fifties his perceptive wit transcends the decades and cultural boundaries bringing the show rave reviews from the international press and public from Edinburgh to Sydney, and many places in between. Let the Right One In
|
|
Let the Right One In borrows its title from a Morrissey song, but don't let that put you off. It's an angular and lusty teen horror movie based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's bestseller in which lonesome, whey-faced 12-year-old Oskar (Kare Hedebrant) becomes smitten by a young, female vampire named Eli (Lina Leandersson). Described by numerous critics as one of the best films of the year.

Sugar
|
|
Sugar is a sporting drama with a difference, a film which ducks an outpouring of cliche to expose the whole rags-to-riches mantra as a bright and shining lie. Miguel 'Sugar' Santos is a teenage Dominican baseball pitcher who finds himself courted by a gringo talent scout and set down in the minor leagues of smalltown Iowa. He works and plays hard and is exploited to the full by the sporting kingpins - a powerful tale of grace under fire; of triumph in the face of a wider, institutionalised adversity.

The Searchers

Elevenses Film Club
The Searchers tells the emotionally complex story of a perilous, hate-ridden quest and Homeric-style odyssey of self-discovery after a Comanche massacre, while also exploring the themes of racial prejudice and sexism. Its meandering tale examines the inner psychological turmoil of a fiercely independent, crusading man obsessed with revenge and hatred, who searches for his two nieces (Pippa Scott and Natalie Wood) among the 'savages' over a five-year period. The film's major tagline echoed the search: 'he had to find her...he had to find her.'

Based on a little-known 1936 novella by the Irish author Baron Dunsany, Dean Spanley stars Jeremy Northam as Fisk, an Edwardian publisher who is exasperated by his cantankerous father, played by Peter O'Toole in a dotty yet powerful performance. Fisk's older brother was killed in the Boer war and his mother died of a broken heart soon after, but Fisk Sr refuses to grieve. A charming family comedy particular suited for the older generation.

An Education 95 mins Cert :15
The 1960s were a time of change. So is life when you are 16. That combination propels An Education, set in London in 1961, and makes it an unforgettable coming-of-age story. Attractive, bright, 16-year-old Jenny is stifled by the tedium of adolescent routine; she can’t wait for adult life to begin. Carey Mulligan is outstanding as Jenny, giving the film its unmissable quality.
