Spring has Sprung!

New programme unveiled for Spring


This season, expect drama with Donal Kelly’s Catalpa, (Feb 3), Theatre CLUB presents Heroin, Katie O’ Kelly’s Counter Culture (Feb 14), The New Theatre’s A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man (March 10) and the hilarious Weighing-In with Isobel Mahon and Rose Henderson. (April 24).

Music is hitting the high notes with The Fureys (Feb 6) who return to Dunamaise for their 10th concert! Stockton’s Wing (March 1), firm favourite with Portlaoise audiences, and Johnny McEvoy (March 8) will lift the roof with his dulcet tones. Dominic Kirwin (March 20) has a  huge fan-base in Co. Laois and Don Baker (April 17) returns this season with his unique and individual sound on the harmonica and guitar. Finally, Comhaltas Fleadh are hosting a fundraising concert for Dunamaise Arts Centre with Goitse (May 2).

Kids are not forgotten this season and Lambert Puppet Theatre are back with Cinderella and Bosco (March 8). The Ark also returns with the world premier of Far Away From Me a theatrical children’s offering inspired by the Princess and the Pea fairytale and infused with wild energy, ariel performance, dance, music and storytelling.

Local theatre groups, speech and drama schools and dance troops are also well-represented this Spring with Laois Open Door presenting The Hen Night Epiphany (Feb 20/21), Laois dance Platform will showcase their talented dancers (March 7), Harney School of Speech and Drama (March 15) with ten new plays written and directed by Francis Harney and Chatterbox School of Speech and Drama (March 22). Portarlington Drama Society present A Wake in the West (March 26/27), Curtain Call Stage School with Give My Regards, to Broadway (March 28) and Ceiltis School of Speech and Drama will present choral pieces, short plays and dance (March 29).  Jesters Stage Academy is up next (April 1 / 2)  and Midlands Drama School presents Wicked Oz (April 11). Schools are also returning this Spring with Scoil Chriost Ri presenting You Can’t Stop the Beat (Feb 10 -12).

Other headline acts to look forward to include Michael Harding’s Hanging with the Elephant (Feb 26) which is a unique one-man-show during which Michael speaks about his life, love and growing old. A former author, playwright and Irish times Columnist  - this is a show not to be missed.

A full season of fantastic cinema is also available with our ‘Elevenses’ film club and the Wednesday night screenings. This season expect Funny Face, Noble, Jimmy’s Hall, Patrick’s Day, The Theory of Everything, Mary Poppins and Me Myself and Mum to mention but a few.

The Dunamaise Art Gallery is also full of interesting and creative works from artists near and far including Paul Mosse - A Retrospective (14 Jan – 14 Feb), William Hamilton and Diarmait Grogan – Shanghai Ritual (19 February – March 22), and Davey Moore, I See A Darkness (26 March – 22 May).
