Great Cinema Deserves Great Audiences

ACCESS >CINEMA  “GREAT CINEMA DESERVES GREAT AUDIENCES”

Dunamaise Arts Centre is sharing a specially commissioned short film on behalf of access>CINEMA to launch a new GREAT CINEMA DESERVES GREAT AUDIENCES campaign. We work year round with access>CINEMA to specially curate the unique cinema offering available to all local audiences via our big screen.

In this short film, ordinary people from all over Ireland discuss their love of cinema and what the unique experience means to them. The film showcases access>CINEMA’s vital work in supporting film clubs, community cinemas and arts centres to bring cinema from every corner of the world to audiences across Ireland to enjoy and experience in their own communities.

Dunamaise Arts Centre is a proud member of access>CINEMA’s network. Through our work with access>CINEMA, we have been able to make a considerable contribution to the life of film lovers in Laois through the screening of films, both Irish and international, that are not usually seen on commercial cinema screens.  We know how important these screenings are for our audiences, and can’t wait to be able to welcome people back safely to cinema very soon.

In the meantime, please share access>CINEMA’s film across your own social media platforms and also share your own experiences of cinema-going through the hashtag #GreatCinema.

The campaign also asks people to visit accesscinema.ie/donate, where they have the opportunity to make a donation, which will help access>CINEMA continue this work and advance its goal of sharing the gift of cinema across Ireland.

The GREAT CINEMA DESERVES GREAT AUDIENCES film was directed by Dublin-based film-maker Gar O’Rourke, whose acclaimed debut short documentary Kachalka (2019) was selected to compete in film festivals around the world.

access>CINEMA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council.

The funny and touching Rams is sure to have audiences flock to see it. In remote Western Australia, two estranged brothers, Colin (Sam Neill, Jurassic Park) and Les (Michael Caton, The Castle), are at war. Raising separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline, the two men work side by side yet are worlds apart. When Les’s prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal illness, authorities order a purge of every sheep in the valley. While Colin attempts to stealthily outwit the powers that be, Les opts for angry defiance. But can the warring brothers set aside their differences and have a chance to reunite their family, save their herd, and bring their community back together?

Inspired by the 2015 Icelandic film Hrútar, but very much its own piece, Rams was directed by Jeremy Sims (Last Cab to Darwin) and also stars Miranda Richardson (The Crying Game) plus Asher Keddie (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Wayne Blair (The Sapphires).

This first feature documentary entirely in Scottish Gaelic presents a lyrical portrait of the fishing community in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, and its intimate relationship with the sea.

Director Alastair Cole takes the audience on an immersive journey into the heart of a thousand-year-old community, blending observational footage shot over the past three years with archive sound recordings of stories and songs from the mid-20thcentury, set to an original score by acclaimed folk musician Aidan O’Rourke.

At the core of the film is an extraordinary trove of sound archive, recorded by pioneering Scottish ethnographers, who visited the Outer Hebrides to capture the hardship and romance of life lived in precarious balance with the sea. These newly restored recordings preserve an oral history of lore and legends, tall tales and tragedies, passed down through generations of Gaelic speakers reaching back hundreds of years.

This soundtrack from the past is accompanied by images of the working rhythm of the islands today, on land and on water. The tough realities of fishing and gutting in all weathers and seasons co-exist alongside superstitions and visions of mermaids, faerie folk and mysterious vanishing islands.
