Kate MacDonald
Abbeyleix Graduate Biennale Award Winner
June - July

Worn fiddle strings act as self-portraits, reflecting on identity, disconnection, and the shift toward living authentically. Drawing from her background in traditional Irish music, Kate uses collected materials from luthier Muireann Ní Shé to follow a thread through drawing, print, and installation. The work explores themes of masking, unmasking, and personal transformation.
Kate has a multidisciplinary practice reflecting her curiosity and interest in storytelling through sustainable printmaking, drawing, video/moving image and found objects. She is passionate about teaching, fostering creative communities and organising events.
Dunamaise Arts Centre awards a solo exhibition to a past graduate of Abbeyleix College QQI level 5 & 6 Art Courses. Initiated as a welcome support for professional artists emerging from Laois / who had studied in Laois, a first major Solo Show is a milestone for artists, leading to professional status and is a criterion for much professional funding. The Award includes a paid artist fee as well as full technical installation, marketing, promotional and administrative support to an emerging artist, to present a first solo show in this significant public gallery. The Award marks a major milestone on what we are sure will be a long and fruitful artistic career for Kate MacDonald.
