Conor Walton-Allegories of Painting

Dunamaise Arts Centre presents

Allegories of Painting

14th September - 13th October 2012

Dunamaise Arts Centre is honoured to present Conor Walton’s ninth solo-exhibition which was opened in the gallery by Carey Clarke PPRHAon Friday 14th September at 7pm.

Allegories of Painting is an exhibition of figure paintings by Conor Walton exploring themes that reflect upon the nature and power of painting itself. The artist conceives these pictures as painterly 'acts of faith' and challenges himself to realise the potential of his art while symbolically commenting on the process.

Conor’s work is considered to be defined by a concentration of thought and dedication to skill in composition as well the exquisite and expert application of paint.  His captivating still lifes, portraits and landscapes are worlds of their own, worlds that tempt you to walk into them, and connect even deeper than their beautifully wrought surfaces.

Walton says that his artworks play complex games that seek to “provoke thought, to stir up the mental sediments, to sum something up. The idea that a painting can be a microcosm, a compressed or metaphorical image of the world, complete on its own terms, is what interests me.”

Currently based in Wicklow, Conor Walton (b.1970) studied painting at NCAD, winning the Taylor Prize in 1993, the year of his graduation. After further studies in the UK and Italy, Conor returned to full-time painting in Ireland in 1996. Five solo-exhibitions followed with Jorgensen Fine Art in Dublin. Since winning 3rd Prize for Painting at the Florence Biennale in 1999, Conor has developed an international career and now exhibits widely outside of Ireland, with recent solo shows in the UK, Denmark and Norway. His portraits have won prizes at the BP Portrait Award and Portrait Ireland (both 2005) and his works are found in public and private collections worldwide.

All are welcome to visit our gallery and Conor Walton’s exhibition will continue until 13th October 2012.
