Father mother sister brother movie scene jim jarmusch

Jim Jarmusch’s anthology film, which won the top prize at the Berlin Film Festival, captures three very different family reunions. In the US, a brother and sister visit their reclusive father. In Dublin, two sisters receive their occasional invite to lunch with their famous mother. And in Paris, two siblings reunite following the sudden death of their parents.

Told in Jarmusch’s trademark calm, deadpan style, Father Mother Sister Brother is a thoroughly engaging mix of comedy and drama that gets at very real truths about the messiness of family and the complications that often arise when emotions remain suppressed. Its middle chapter - filmed in Dublin - will be of particular interest to Irish viewers.

Review quotes:

“★★★★ A deeply pleasing and gently quietist triptych on the subject of family.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“★★★★ A delicate, lovely portrait of the relationships between parents and kids that suggests, despite shared genes and bloodlines, that those closest to us might still be unknowable.” - Ian Freer, Empire Magazine
